Coach Van Rossum Announces Incoming Women’s Cross Country and Track Freshmen

WILLIAMSBURG, VA (July 2, 2003) - With the conclusion of both the collegiate and high school national championships, head women’s cross country and track and field coach Pat Van Rossum has announced the newcomers to the William and Mary women’s cross country and track and field teams. Included are 12 stellar athletes who will add further depth to already accomplished squads:

Elizabeth Arnold (Richmond, VA / Douglas Freeman)
Colonial District Pole Vault Champion with 10'9'' best.

Meghan Bishop (Blue Bell, PA / Gwynedd-Mercy Academy)
Finished second in the 1600m (4:58.10) and third in the 800m (2:14.90) at the Pennsylvania State Championships, also has personal-record of 10:53.5 (3200m)

Brenna Blevins (Pulaski, VA / Pulaski County)
Multiple time All-State performer with personal records of: 5'6'' (high jump), 17'6'' (long jump), 35-2'' (triple jump), 58.93 (400m)

Julia Cathcart (Starkville, MS / Starkville)
Finished seventh in the mile (4:54.71) and eighth in the two-mile (10:51.07) at the Adidas National High School Championships

Katie Ham (Bozeman, MT / Bozeman)
State Champion in javelin with state record throw of 138'8''

Lauren Kloss (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough)
Finished third in the 400m hurdles (63.8) at the New Jersey State Championships

Jennifer Showker (Harrisonburg, VA / Spotswood)
Finished third in the 2002 VA State Shotput and Discus with personal records (from 2003) of: 39'7'' and 129'1'' respectively

Heather Stevenson (East Lyme, CT / East Lyme)
Multiple time All-State performer with personal-records of: 5:06.89 (1600m), 2:17.3 (800m) and
3:03.0 (1000m)

Kate Willever (Pennington, NJ / Hopewell Valley Central)
Finished 8th in the 2000m steeplechase at the Adidas 2003 National High School Champion-ships with personal record of 7:08.89. Has also run 2:16.7 (800m) and 5:05.11 (1600m)

Michelle Wolf (Hummelstown, PA / Hershey)
Multiple time State Meet competitor with personal records of: 5'4'' (high jump), 35'8''(triple jump), 60.3 (400m)

Jessica Wolfe (Arlington, VA / Bishop Ireton)
VA State Catholic Champion in 1600m (5:16.01) and 3200m (11:27.74)

Kathleen Woody (Herndon, VA / Oakton)
Multiple time All-State performer with personal records of: 18'2'' (LT), 37'9'' (TJ), 12.50 (100 m), 25.57 (200 m)

The newcomers will add to the already talented teams which reached great heights this past season. In cross country, the Tribe took second at the CAA Championships and placed 23rd at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. In track, the team snared the CAA Championship for the third straight year and sent one athlete to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and two competitors to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

“I'm incredibly pleased with our incoming class,” Van Rossum concluded. “Director of Track and Field Dan Stimson and I feel it's one of the best and most versatile classes we've ever had, and will lead us to having the strongest team we've ever had this upcoming year."
