Vidal, Whiteford Upset No. 6 Nationally Ranked Doubles Team at ITA Kickoff Weekend

Columbus, Ohio - Senior Sebastien Vidal and sophomore Jamie Whiteford highlighted the William and Mary men’s tennis team performance on Saturday, knocking off one of the top doubles teams in the country in a dual-match against No. 4-ranked Ohio State as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Vidal and Whiteford continued their stellar pairs play, tallying a win over the No. 6 nationally ranked Buckeye doubles team. OSU, though, pulled out the win over the Tribe in the first-round contest, 7-0, at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Playing at the top doubles position, Vidal and Whiteford notched an 8-6 win over the No. 6-ranked team of Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola. Buchanan and Rola entered the match at 7-2 overall and were the ITA All-American Championship Runner up in doubles. Vidal and Whiteford improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in dual-match competition this season. Over the last two years, the Tribe twosome is a combined 20-4 (.833).

It marked the first win over a nationally ranked opponent for the Vidal-Whiteford team. Vidal recorded his second career top-10 doubles win and his fifth pairs win over a top 30 opponent. It also marked the 92nd career doubles win for Vidal moving him into sole possession of third place on the Tribe’s career doubles wins list. He is only eight shy of becoming just the second W&M player with 100 career doubles victories.

Ohio State, with a lineup that features four nationally ranked singles players and a trio of nationally ranked doubles teams, took the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions to secure the opening point of the match. The defending Big Ten Champions and NCAA Quarterfinalists claimed each of the six singles positions in straight sets to secure the team victory.

W&M, which is ranked No. 75 nationally, will face No. 69 South Carolina, who fell to No. 56 UC Irvine in the opening round, at 10 a.m. on Sunday in the consolation draw of the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Columbus, Ohio. Live updates for the match will be available at OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
