Senior Profile: Karla Bercaw

-

Describe what it means to be a senior captain (part of the leadership council).
I think itís a privilege to be a part of the Leadership Council (we call ourselves TLC, The Leadership Council). As a senior captain, I strive to lead by example, in and out of the gym. I love being a part of such a strong, supportive senior class that can lead the team together.

With the graduation of three seniors and addition of five freshmen, what is the teamís chemistry like this season?
We struggled with a lot of injuries last season so itís refreshing to have five talented and hardworking freshmen join the team this year. Plus our sophomores are healthier and coming back stronger than ever. Weíre all competing for spots in lineup and working our butts off to make this a great season, so Iím really excited!

What are your goals for this season?
First and foremost, I want to stay healthy for my senior season. Iím also looking to upgrade my vault and top all of my previously earned career-high scores, but most importantly I just want to enjoy every moment and have a fun and successful senior year!

Which competition are you most looking forward to this season?
I am definitely looking forward to USAGs at the Air Force Academy in Colorado. I competed at a meet in Colorado Springs when I was a senior in high school and it was absolutely beautiful, so I canít wait to travel out there and go out with a bang at our last meet of the season!

What is your most memorable moment with the W&M gymnastics team?
Itís hard to pick just one, but USAGs my sophomore year was definitely an experience Iíll never forget. We placed third in the team finals and I made event finals on vault!

What is your favorite event and why?
I would have to say beam is my favorite event because I love to practice it. And also, the whole team trains beam so itís the one event that I get to practice with each of my teammates.

What is your least favorite event and why?
I donít really have a least favorite event, but I definitely get the most nervous to compete floor.

What has been your proudest moment competing in gymnastics?
My proudest moment was at ECACs last year when we had a rocky start on beam but we came back stronger than ever on the other three events to place second in our conference! We were cheering loud, showing off all of our routines, and just having fun.

Of all your teammates, past and present, who have you learned the most from and why?
Shout out to Monica Goldblatt. We did club gymnastics together and she was the one who ultimately convinced me to come to William and Mary. She was the one Iíd turn to for guidance as a baby freshman, and she was always there for me. I couldnít have asked for a better ďforever teammate.Ē

What does Tribe Pride mean to you?
It means being a part of something bigger than myself. And being decked out in GREEN and GOLD!

Do you have any pre-meet rituals or superstitions?
I donít really have any. I just look forward to our team huddle that gets us pumped up before we go out and compete.

Who has had the biggest impact on your gymnastics career?
I wouldnít have gotten this far as a gymnast without the support from my family. They are my biggest fans and I look forward to competing because I love seeing them at every meet.

What do you enjoy doing most other than gymnastics?
I love spending all my free time with friends and family.

What is something interesting about you that few people know?
Iím addicted to Slurpees. Sometimes I drink more than one a day.

What is your favorite spot on campus?
Our team locker room because we finally have one thatís all ours!

What has been your favorite road trip while competing at W&M?
My favorite road trip was when our bus broke down on the way to Penn State and we got stuck at a 7-eleven. I love Slurpees.

What do you think youíll miss most about your experience with gymnastics at W&M after you graduate?
My teammates for sure. They made my college experience an unforgettable one, and Iím really going to miss them all and the fun times we had together.

After you complete your collegiate gymnastics career, what would you like to do?
Ever since I was little I wanted to be a teacher so I hope to pursue that dream.
