Men's Tennis Splits BIG EAST Doubleheader
Williamsburg - The William and Mary mens tennis team split a pair of matches against BIG EAST competition on Saturday. The Green and Gold dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 36 Notre Dame to open the day, before upending Villanova, 7-0, in the nightcap. The College moved to 5-2 overall on the season.
Against the Wildcats, the Tribe swept the doubles matches to take the opening point of the contest. Junior Ilja Orre and sophomore Adrian Vodislav tallied their second win of the year rolling to an 8-0 victory over Rafael Santiago and John Drosick at the No. 3 slot. Senior Sebastien Vidal and sophomore Jamie Whiteford improved to 5-2 in doubles action, including a 3-1 at the top spot, with an 8-5 win over David Shaheen and Matt Colonnese at the No. 1 position. Sophomore Anton Andersson and freshman Ben Guthrie rounded out the sweep with an 8-4 win over Trenton Alenik and Thomas OBrien at the second slot. The W&M duo improved to 4-2 in dual-match action.
In singles, Andersson rolled to his 10th win of the season without dropping a game. The Tribe sophomore dominated Santiago, 6-0, 6-0, at the top spot to up his dual ledger to 4-2. Vodislav tallied his team-leading 11th singles win of the year in perfect fashion as well. He rolled past Colonnese, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 5 slot.
Freshman Ben Hoogland kept pace with Vodislav also recording his team-best 11th win of the year. The Green and Gold rookie defeated OBrien, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 4 singles position. Orre notched a straight-set, 6-4, 6-1, win over Alenik at the No. 3 spot. He upped his season win total to 10 and improved to 3-1 in dual matches.
Vidal and freshman John Banks rounded out the W&M sweep of Villanova with victories at the No. 2 and No. 5 spots, respectively. Vidal notched his eighth win of the year and improved to 4-2 in dual matches with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Shaheen. Banks upended Ryan Peyton, 6-2, 7-6 (7), at the fifth slot for this sixth singles win, including a 2-1 dual-match ledger.
In the morning match, the Tribe fell to No. 36 Notre Dame, 6-1. The Irish won all three doubles matches to claim the first point of the match and then won five of the six singles contests. Whiteford claimed the lone W&M win at the No. 4 spot in come-from-behind fashion. After dropping the opening set, 6-1, to Greg Andrews, the Tribe sophomore forced a third-set super tiebreaker with a 6-3 win in the second set. In the tiebreaker, Whiteford took home the victory, 10-7, to improve to 4-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in dual match play.
W&M will travel to No. 4 Ohio State to take part in the ITA Kick-off Weekend. The Tribe will face the Buckeyes at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, before battling either No. 55 UC-Irvine or No. 56 South Carolina on Sunday, Jan. 30. The winner of the regional event will advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, Feb. 18-21, in Seattle, Wash.
