Tribe Menís Gymnastics Open Season at Navy Open
Annapolis, Md. - The William and Mary menís gymnastics squad kicked off its 2011 season with a third-place showing in a five-team field at the Navy Open hosted in Macdonough Hall on the United States Naval Academy.
The event marked the start of W&M Head Coach Cliff Gauthierís 38th season at the helm of the Tribe program and saw the squad score 315.1-team points. Eleventh-ranked Temple took the top honors, with a score of 327.3, while the 14th-ranked Midshipmen came in second with a score of 324.3. Springfield College (309.05) and Brockport (263.4) rounded out the field.
Individually, the Collegeís efforts were highlighted by strong performances from two members of its freshman class, as all-arounder Daniel Potemski (Round Rock, Texas) led all Tribe scorers with a six-event total of 76.5, which placed him in eighth place overall. Fellow classmate, Landon Funiciello (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) was the Tribeís top individual scorer on both the rings (13.9) and vault (14.5). Funicielloís mark on the rings placed him third overall at the event, which was also the Tribeís highest individual event finish.
Senior team captain Andy Hunter (Tallahasse, Fla.) led the Tribe on both the floor exercise (13.8) and high bar (12.9), placing sixth overall in both events.
Sophomores Kris Yeager (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Vince Smurro (Manalapan, N.J.) posted the teamís top marks on the pommel (13.1) and parallel bars (13.4), respectively.
The teamís next action will be on February 12, when it will host the State Open at Kaplan Arena. The event is scheduled to start at 3 pm.
