W&M Men's Cross Country Sweeps CAA Post-Season Awards

RICHMOND, VA - The William and Mary men's cross country team swept the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association post-season awards Thursday, a feat that was announced by the conference office following a vote of the league's head coaches. It is the 11th time that the Tribe has swept the CAA's post-season awards, and third time in the past four years.

Grad student Chas Gillespie (Wilmette, Ill.) was named Athlete of the Year after leading the Tribe in all four races he ran this season. Named the CAA's Runner of the Week after finishing fifth at the Paul Short Invitational and eighth at the Pre-National Invitationals, Gillespie finished 12th at the Southeast Regional for all-region honors and led the College to an unprecedented third-straight region title. At the NCAA Championships, Gillespie again proved to be the team's top runner when he crossed the line in 53rd place overall.

Redshirt-freshman Josh Hardin (Sterling, Va.) was named the Rookie of the Year, after finishing as the league's top freshman in every race. A member of the Tribe's varsity seven in every race, Hardin earned honors at every level during the post-season, beginning with a runner-up finish at the CAA Championships. He was 17th overall and third on the team at the Southeast Regional, and was the fifth runner for W&M at the NCAA Championships.

Stephen Walsh added the CAA Coach of the Year plaque to the Southeast Region award he won on November 18th. In his first season with William and Mary, Walsh led the men's team to its 11th-straight CAA title and another national top-20 ranking and NCAA Championship appearance despite losing five of the seven runners off of last year's varsity team. The Tribe won the Southeast Regional for the third time in a row, a first in school history, and was also third at the Paul Short Invitational and sixth at Pre-Nationals.
