W&M Cross Country Opens Season With Tune-Up at Spider Alumni Open

RICHMOND, VA - The William and Mary men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2010 campaign with a tune-up race Saturday at the Spider Alumni Open, competing against Richmond. The men claimed a narrow victory over the Spiders, placing three runners in the top four, while the women took second. Results beyond the top five were not available as of press time.

In the men's race, which was 5K instead of the normal eight- or ten-kilometers, redshirt-freshman Josh Hardin (Sterling, Va.) led the Tribe in his first attached race, taking second overall in 15:22. Junior Liam Anastasia-Murphy (Gloucester, Mass.) was third in 15:27.1, and junior Peter Dorrell (Blacksburg, Va.) finished fourth in 15:30.6.

In the women's race, it was redshirt-freshman Megan Fitzpatrick (Ashburn, Va.) who held top position for the College, taking fifth overall in 11:29.6. The women's race was only two miles in length (~3,200m), instead of the normal five- or six-kilometers.

William and Mary's next race on both sides will come on September 25th, as the Tribe hosts the Colonial Inter-Regional Challenge at the Eastern State Hospital course.
