Shannon Burke - Assistant Coach
After a stellar playing career at Notre Dame, Shannon Burke enters her first season as an assistant on the Tribe coaching staff.
While Burke will be instrumental in all aspects of the Tribe program, her primary responsibilities will include working with the defense.
"I am extremely excited about the addition of Shannon Burke to our staff,” Halfpenny said this summer at the time of her hiring. “She has an outstanding lacrosse background and immediately impressed me with her passion and intensity for the sport of lacrosse. She is a natural leader and will make an impact coaching as a defense specialist – an area where she excelled in college at Notre Dame.”
One of the nation’s top defenders during her collegiate career at ND, Burke earned IWLCA All-America honors as a senior in 2009. Additionally, she garnered IWLCA first-team all-region accolades and first-team All-Big East distinction while serving as a team captain during her final season with the Fighting Irish. Burke also earned all-region and all-conference honors as a junior. The Timonium, Md., native finished her career ranked second all-time at Notre Dame in caused turnovers (106) and third in ground balls (139) and draw controls (124).
"Shannon has been a huge asset to the teams she has played on and coached by holding them to a high standard of success,” Halfpenny said. “This in turn has helped her teams achieve success at the conference and national levels. I am looking forward to seeing this trickle down to our players this year."
In addition to her individual honors, Burke was instrumental in helping Notre Dame earn three NCAA Tournament appearances – including a trip to the Final Four in 2006. Additionally, she helped the ’06 squad establish a single-season record with 15 wins.
“I am very excited to join the William and Mary team,” Burke said. “The competitive level of play, the desire to become a top-tier team, and the welcoming atmosphere are absolutely unparalleled. I am so thrilled to be apart of such a wonderful staff and team.”
Prior to joining the Tribe staff, Burke served as an assistant lacrosse and field hockey coach at Stevenson University from 2009-10. While there, she helped the lacrosse program achieve its first-ever top-20 ranking.
Burke graduated with degrees in pre-professional and sociology from Notre Dame in 2009.
