Ed Moran '03 Takes Second in the U.S. 10,000m National Championships

DES MOINES, IOWA - William and Mary alumni Ed Moran '03, MPP '05 ran a terrific race Thursday night at the USAT&F National Track and Field Championships, holding the lead in the men's 10,000m for much of the final mile and holding on for the silver medal.

Complete Results

Moran took out the first lap, running in the lead with Nike teammate Patrick Smyth on his shoulder in 73 seconds. The pair continued to hold the lead through the first couple miles, passing eight laps in 9:49 as the race developed into a tactical masterpiece. On the ninth lap there was a breakaway and Moran fell back slightly, but kept in the top five leading the chase pack.

By the halfway point of the race, 12 laps in, the chase pack had caught back up and Moran was comfortably floating between fourth and fifth. With eight laps to go there was another move that Moran was able to cover, moving up to third briefly and settling into fourth for the lap, then covering a second-stage move into third as the field began lapping runners. As the race approached six laps left, Moran retook the lead and pushed the pace, beginning to break away from the leaders with pre-race favorite Galen Rupp on his shoulder.

The two continued to open their lead in the final mile, and kept their same positions through the line with two laps to go. Moran proved himself game in the chase after Rupp took over the lead with 600 meters to go, but was unable to retake the lead and finished second in 29:03.07, just under four seconds back and over 15 seconds clear of the field.

An MBA student in the Mason School of Business, Moran's silver medal was a career-best at the U.S. Championships, and the best finish for a Tribe runner or alum since Hal Michael '71 won the mile at the 1970 AAU national championships. His previous best came at the 2008 Olympic Trials, when he took fourth in the 10,000m. While running for the Tribe from 2000-05, he was a four-time All-American, and last year was named as one of the Colonial Athletic Association's 25 greatest athletes in both men's track and field as well as cross country.

Since finishing his collegiate career, Moran has been active in coaching both the men's and women's teams for W&M, and has been a five-time member of Team USA. In 2007, he won the 5,000m gold medal at the Pan-American Games, setting the meet record in the process. In 2006 and 2008, he was a member of the U.S. contingent in the Chiba Ekiden Relay, and he ran at the World Cross Country Championships in both 2008 and 2009.
