W&M's All-East Performances Lead to CAA Weekly Awards

RICHMOND, VA - After several outstanding performances last weekend at the IC4A and ECAC Championships, three William and Mary track and field athletes were selected Tuesday as Athletes of the Week by the Colonial Athletic Association. The three awards raises the Tribe's total to 13 awards this season, six for the men's team and seven for the women's squad.

Earning field athlete of the week honors for women was senior Nicole Kazuba (Chantilly, Va.), who cleared the bar at 12-8.25 (3.87 meters) for third place and her sixth consecutive All-East award in the pole vault. The four-time CAA Champion, Kazuba ranks 15th in the East region this season, and won her second weekly award from the CAA on Tuesday.

Classmate Kayley Byrne (Oak Hill, Va.) was named women's track athlete of the week after finishing second Friday night in the 10,000m. Byrne's time of 35:45.90 was a career-best, and resulted in her fourth All-East award.

On the men's side, sophomore Liam Anastasia-Murphy (Gloucester, Mass.) was named track athlete of the week after earning All-East accolades for the third time. He finished eighth in the 3,000m steeplechase Friday night, clearing the course in a career-fast 8:58.70. Anastasia-Murphy is the 10th runner in school history to break 9 minutes in the steeplechase, and ranks eighth all-time at the College.

All three athletes and many of their teammates figure to be competing next weekend, May 27-29, in the NCAA Preliminary Rounds at North Carolina A&T University. The top 48 declared athletes in every event will compete for the right to advance to the NCAA Finals in one month, in Eugene, Oregon.
