W&M Men's Track and Field Wins Two Races Thursday at the Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The William and Mary men's track team had a late night Thursday at the Penn Relays, but the wait was well worth it as the Tribe came away with two gold medals and four IC4A qualifications in the distance carnival.

Complete Results

5,000m Run
After 115 years with only seven sub-14 minute 5,000m runners, senior Lewis Woodard (Charlotte, N.C.) nearly became the fourth Tribe runner in the past two months to achieve that milestone when he won the 5,000m Thursday night in 14:01.51. His time was a career-best by nearly 11 seconds, and qualified Woodard for the IC4A Championships in May. Woodard ranks 20th in the East Region and 55th nationally after his performance.

10,000m Run
Also winning with a career-best effort was All-American Colin Leak (Chadds Ford, Pa.) in the 10,000m, as he timed 29:38.01 for the laurels. Leak cut over five-and-a-half seconds from his previous best to improve to ninth all-time at W&M, and also qualified for the IC4A Championships. Tom Burke (Edina, Minn.) will join Leak at the IC4A meet after improving his own career-best by a massive 27 seconds, and taking sixth in 29:45.6. In the latest NCAA rankings, Leak is 37th nationally and 22nd in the East, while Burke checks in at 54th in the nation and 26th in the East.

3,000m Steeplechase
In the steeplechase, senior Harry Miller (Portland, Ore.) ran 9:04.79 for fourth-place, reaffirming his qualification to the IC4A Championships.

The Penn Relays continue today with the distance medley relay for the Tribe, and tomorrow with the 4x800m relay as well as the javelin and hammer throws.
